Catio winterproofing: this is how to keep your cat warm, dry and safe
Winterproofing a catio is important to give your cat a safe and comfortable outdoor place even in the cold months. Cats like warmth, shelter and dry places to sleep. With a few clever modifications, you can turn any outdoor catio into a cozy winter place where your cat will love to stay - even in rain, wind or snow.
Why your catio should be winter-ready:
In winter, rain, frost, high winds and snow can quickly cause cold and dampness in the catio. Winterizing the catio keeps your cat warm and dry, creates a draft-free and safe environment, keeps the catio durable and in good condition , and allows your cat to enjoy the outdoors all year long.
1. Waterproof roof for a dry catio
A waterproof roof is the most important step for a winter-proof catio.
Choose materials such as:
- polycarbonate sheets
- plastic roof panels
- durable steel or HPL
A good roof prevents leaks, keeps out snow and rain, and provides a warmer, more stable temperature in the catio.
Important: Keep the roof free of snow in winter. Snow accumulation adds weight, moisture and cold. Regular cleaning prevents damage.
2. Create windproof corner or walls
Draughts are one of the biggest causes of cold in cats. Therefore, make one or more sides of the catio windproof.Consider:
- plexiglass insert panels

- HPL or polycarbonate wall panels
- wooden walls
- transparent windscreens
This creates a sheltered, draft-free corner where your cat can enjoy a nice retreat.
3. Add high and dry lying areas
Cats like to lie high - and in winter especially like to lie high and dry.
Therefore, place:
- raised lounging boards
- sturdy platforms
- wooden or plastic lying levels with anti-slip
Higher areas stay drier and feel warmer than the cold winter ground.
4. Good foundation and drainage
A wet floor makes the catio cold and unhealthy faster. A solid surface keeps the catio comfortable, such as moisture-permeable artificial grass. Good drainage prevents puddles and rising moisture.
5. Warm shelter for extra comfort
A warm shelter is indispensable in a winter-proof catio.
Preferably use:
- straw (stays dry and retains heat)
- an insulated cat house
- a sheltered corner with canopy
Avoid blankets: they absorb moisture and get cold.
6. Protect water bowls from freezing
In winter, check daily that the water is not frozen. Use a canopy or insulated container to keep the water liquid longer.
Winterproof catio: comfortable all year round
With a waterproof roof, windbreaks, raised lying areas and a warm shelter, you make the catio completely winterproof. This allows your cat to enjoy the outdoors safely, warm and dry even in winter. Regular snow removal from the roof keeps the catio in top condition.
